I remembered recently about the coal fires that were still used in the school in the early 60's. Particularly in the room at the top of the North East tower that the abode of Pat Campbell( Head of the Maths Dept). It was the rush to get the seats nearest the front of the class for the warmest place. In particularly frosty days( we still got milk in those days) the milk would sometimes be delivered frozen so the crate was placed near the fire to defrost. Glass bottles with the frozen cream expanding to give it a top hat effect.
A coal scuttle was in the classroom to keep the fire topped up during the day. I presume these fires were set by the janitors in the morning. However I'm not sure what other rooms in the old building had coal fires.
Perhaps others of this vintage can add to the story
