A visit from Francis Gruber (1945)

It has been many years since Mr Gruber (1945) walked through the school gates, but it was with a smile and genuine affection that he met with us today.

As we walked the corridors of Lauriston and Greyfriars Mr Gruber told us of war time memories, austerity, and the return of retired teachers to take the place of those who went to war.

He recalled with fondness an amazing memory of a Miss McKenzie whose teaching method was by the means of 'shouting,’ from morning to afternoon, however, he was at pains to tell us that she was also very kind.

The tale of Miss McKenzie did not end here, Francis recalled how she fell from the stage in the School Hall as the boys practiced the Merry Month of June. Taken away in a stretcher to the shock and awe of every boy in the Hall, (and amusement of some) she reminded them all she would be back and would be able to recall every one that laughed.

It is a pleasure to welcome Former Pupils back to the school, if you would like to take a trip down memory lane, please do get in contact with the Development Team (development@george-heriots.com).
