Former Pupil News |
You may have read the Love on Lauriston feature in the latest Issue of Quadrangle. It has certainly sparked some conversation, and now there is a challenger!
Former Pupils Ian Wilkie, (1984) and Fiona Wilkie (Meikle), (1984) have been in touch to set the record straight.
Ian and Fiona met in 1980 during 3rd year, whilst then only acquaintances, the two became much closer by 6th year. The love story goes.....
Ian and Fiona had a great group of friends who would frequently meet up in town and the two gradually got to know each other better on those nights out. One evening Ian plucked up the courage to call Fiona at home (no mobiles!) and pretended he didn’t know how to get to a nightclub called 'Cinderella Rockerfellas', where there was a party, so asked if he could meet Fiona at a bar called Misty’s. It turns out Fiona hadn’t been intending to go, but pretended she had and agreed! They got on so well that Ian later completely forgot about his ruse and took Fiona on a shortcut to the party, proving he knew where he was going all along!
Things moved on pretty quickly from there, and after leaving school, the pair were engaged in December 1984 and married on 7th February 1987.
Those friendships made at Heriot's did not end there with a wedding party jam packed with Herioters, bridesmaids Lesley Ford (1984) and Alison Thom (1984). Best man David Sim (1983) and ushers Graham Meikle (1981) and Derek Cartner (1984). Of course, Ian's dad was there, also an FP (1948), and a couple of Rugby Club Presidents among the guests in Bob Tollervey and John Ross. Dr Kenneth Milne, father of the famous “Three Bears” Milne brothers, was also a guest.
Both Ian and Fiona say they are grateful to Heriot’s for many reasons, but none more so than bringing them together.
