Thank you to Doug Bathgate (1974) for making the time to visit school today.

Doug joined Heriot's in P7, when Gibby Galloway was the Assistant Headmaster. A keen footballer, he soon learnt the ways of rugby and recalls the strong sense of comeraderie that he built with fellow classmates while at Heriot's. Mr Cowan, Geography teacher, made a lasting impression on Doug, who went on to study Geology and Geography at Edinburgh University, before going onto Glasgow University for his post graduate study.

Doug has enjoyed an incredible career at sea, creating and mastering mobile vehicles which 'fly' under the sea for underwater exploration projects. He has worked in pretty much every sea around the world, except south America.

Doug's daughter Isla (2022) left Heriot's to study on a full Fulbright Scholarship at Northeastern University in Boston for rowing. She won the National Schools Regatta in 2022 in a four and  rowed for Team GB at the Junior World Championships, winning a Silver medal in the eight.
