A story about 'Kipper'

Stories from the past

Niall Garvie (1984)

It was wonderfu to welcome Niall Garvie (1984) back to school yesterday and hear his stories of the past.

Niall's grand father was a Foundation pupil at Heriot's and was able to pass down some great Heriot's stories.

Former Head of English was Mr Heron, nicknamed 'Kipper' by the boys, because he smoked so heavily. Kipper used to run a special interest class inthe late 1940's called the 'General Purposes Club', where he used to teach the boys how to play Snooker, how to knit and how to take shorthand. A wonderful insight into 'out of the ordinary' teaching for the pupils!

Niall also reported that the weather forecaster for D-Day was a James Stagg, who taught Physics for 3-4 years at Heriot's in the 1920's.

We will encourage Niall to document his stories for posterity and thank you Niall for such an entertaining visit!
