We are delighted to share that Susan Strand (1985) enjoyed a private viewing of the Eglington Jewel at the Fitzwilliam Museum this month.
In June, Susan attended the George Dalgleish lecture where reference was made to one of the remaining pieces of jewellery made by George Heriot that survives today. Being not too far from home, Susan sought out to see it for herself.
Although not currently on display due to restoration works Susan requested to view the piece and the museum kindly obliged.
It is believed that the jewel was given as a wedding gift from Queen Anna of Denmark circa1612 to Lady Anna Livingstone (one of her ladies in waiting). The enamelled case features the Queen’s interlinked letters ‘AR’ for Anna Regina (Queen), in table diamonds, set beneath a closed imperial crown. Inside the case is a portrait of her painted by a member of Nicholas Hilliard’s studio.
Thank you for sharing this with us Susan, it must have been so special to see in person.
