On 12 February 2023 a group gathered in Zemun, outside Belgrade, with a unique connection. They are descendants of the 27 Serbian refugees educated at George Heriot’s School between 1916 -1919, who became famous throughout Scotland for their skills on the rugby pitch, later taking the game back to Serbia.
Zemun is where the last surviving Serbian Herioter (Dimitrije Dulkanovic) lived and where his daughter Brani still lives. Four Serbian Herioters’ families were represented at the lunch, as well as the family of a Serbian refugee boy who was based in Glasgow, and a journalist and her family who made a couple of documentaries shown on Serbian TV some years ago.
Not a bad way to remember the arrival of a group of boys nearly 107 years ago and the impact they had at Heriot's.
